While I deeply value foundational research driven by core scientific questions, my experience has taught me that my interest lies at the intersection of understanding the implications of these scientific drivers in the real world. Because water resources are fundamentally interconnected, a question-driven research approach is incredibly helpful for gaining a deep, technical understanding of why hydrometeorological variables are shifting. It allows me to isolate and understand the underlying drivers of climate change. However, my collaboration with practitioners and community leaders, such as working on a project with the Northern Virginia Regional Commission to update intensity-duration-frequency curves or with the Urban Institute in Florida to map overburdened regions where communities are affected by landfalling storms, was what helped me understand the immediate, practical implications of water and climate risks. My contribution to the first Virginia Climate Assessment report solidified my commitment to providing reliable climate assessments for underrepresented communities and vulnerable ecosystems. Ultimately, these experiences demonstrated how community leaders and engineers translate raw climate science into public safety measures and navigate decisions under deep uncertainty.
